What are the benefits of eating sourdough?
Eating sourdough bread can be beneficial due to its potential easier digestibility, thanks to the fermentation process. This also potentially aides in better nutrient absorption and gut health.
How do I keep my sourdough fresh?
Sourdough, including varieties with added ingredients like chocolate chips, should not be stored in the refrigerator because it stales quickly there. Due to its fermentation, sourdough does not spoil or mold as rapidly as regular bread and can stay fresh for several days at room temperature.
The crust of sourdough bread benefits from exposure to air and will remain crispy and enjoyable for 24-36 hours when left uncovered. To maintain freshness, slice the bread only as needed. After cutting, store it in a cotton tea towel, bread box, or lightly closed plastic bag on the counter. If using a plastic baggie, leave it slightly open at one end.
Sourdough freezes exceptionally well. Wrap it first in plastic wrap and then place it in a freezer baggie. To thaw, leave it at room temperature on a wire rack. Once thawed, it will regain its original freshness and soft texture.
